Our Experience:

This is a nice light pomeade that is good for bringing out the natural curl. It smells clean but I didn't notice a particular scent. We used the Honey Love Pomade after lotioning Jamilahs hair with the Afrikoko Sily Hair lotion. The pomade really made her curls show, it's hard to see from the pictures below but trust me her hair went from super frizzy to curly while I smoothed it through her hair. I could use this to finger curl her hair also which I will probably do later on and post more pics.

Our Experience:

This product says it can be used on wet or dry hair.

Normally, I cannot comb through Jamilah's hair when it is dry. This becomes a problem when Jamilah wants me to re-do her ponytail real quick and I normally have to wet or wash her hair then put a detangler and styling product in. I decided to try the Afrikoko Silky Hair lotion on her dry hair and it smoothed her hair out so nicely and made it manageable so I could comb right through.

Jamilah and I both liked the scent, both agreeing it smelled like sweet tarts!! mmmm!

Normally I need to use a detangler or leave in conditioner to get through my wavy hair but with Original Sprout Luscious Island Conditioner, I did not need to use anything, my hair was left feeling silky and manageable.

Jamilah, still needed to use the Miracle detangler from Original Sprout, though her hair definitely felt more silky than usual. This is a great daily conditioner for the whole family.

I expected a fruity "island" scent from the name but it has more of a fresh scent that can be used by both the ladies and the gents in the family.

Curl Ecstasy Hair Tea Deep Conditioner

Mahisha's Tip: This is a great leave in also! After cleansing and conditioning my hair, I apply a generous amount of Curl Ecstasy, section by section, scrunch and allow to dry. It makes my curls pop!

Before:
Her hair fresh from her ponytail, there was no combing through that! We washed her hair while is was still damp we combed the Curl Ecstasy through her hair, we placed on a plastic cap and lightly used a blow dryer to heat her hair. After 25 minutes we rinsed her hair, towel dried a bit and put a little more Curl Ecstasy in her hair as Mahisha suggested. She was correct it did make her curls pop.

You can see that Jamilah's Hair is much silkier, it was easier to comb through and her curls are more defined.

Curls Curl Ecstasy Hair Tea conditioner is an awesome hair treatment! We are going to use this as a once a week treatment for Jamilah's curls! We have yet to try a CURLS product we have not liked! As with all the Curls products, this conditioner smells DELISH!!

As I have mentioned before in my blog, my children both have a bad eczema problem and it's very hard to find good natural products that work for them. It softened my skin but also absorber nicely and didn't "break-up" my makeup like other oils have in the past. Argan oil softens the skin and works well on itchy skin with eczema.

It's so easy to install, you can get it with either the 3M tape of without, we got it with the tape. There are 3 pieces of tape on the back of the 24" holder, just clean the surface, remove the backing and press against the wall for about 30 seconds (follow directions included)

Once installed just slide the headbands in the slot and they are held securely in place!

OUR EXPERIENCE:

We are not new to pre-shampooing but this is the first product we have used that was made for pre-shampoo. In the past we have used coconut oil or other oils before shampooing the hair. Pre-shampooing helps to protect the hair while shampooing and can add strength to the hair. I was pleasantly surprised to find a product made just for that purpose. I couldn't wait to get my hands on some.

The first thing I noticed about Mogongo & Banana Deep Conditioning and Pre-shampoo hair food masque was the yummy banana scent which my daughter, Jamilah really enjoyed. As directed, I smoothed it through her dampened hair and I combed it through with a large wide tooth comb. Her hair detangled easily. I then shampooed her hair and conditioned it. Normally her hair is quite hard to detangle after shampooing but I noticed after the hair mask her hair was a bit softer and easier to detangle. LOVE IT!

Our Experience:

After detangling Jamilah's hair I rubbed some of the Hair Repair Herbal Butter through my hands, it quickly melted into a smooth oil. I smoothed it through my daughters hair, it quickly disappeared into her hair and scalp, leaving both softer and her hair had a bit of shine. The Herbal Butter is not heavily scented, so it's good for people who can't handle heavy scents. I have found some hair butter that don't disappear into the hair and almost leave a bit of a waxy feel but that's not the case with this hair butter, it smooths into the hair nicely. I like this hair butter and would recommend it to anyone looking for an good natural scented product.

We're baaaack! I have been on hiatus way too long and I miss ya'll ! I am back with new reviews, hairstyles, and answer to all your hair and skin related questions!!!

Though my husband and son cut their hair, Jamilahs hair is longer than ever and I'll be trying some new styles on her. I have been scoping out some new styles on youtube and would like to try mini twists though I have heard they can take several days to accomplish. We'll see if I am up to the task!

Unfortunately, I lost my co-blogger but I am always looking for people to submit suggestions, ideas, hairstyles, reviews and would love to find the right co-blogger for the site.

No, I'm not talking about my hubby, Antonio, I am talking about his hair!!! Yes, after years of growing his long hair Antonio has a new job that requires he have a short haircut.

It was so difficult for Antonio to cut his hair, he had been growing it for so long and really felt it was part of his identity. He was sad to see his hair cut off. He has felt like a completely different person without his hair.

For me, I enjoyed the closeness we shared while I shampooed, treated, braided and twisted his hair. It was kind of a shock to both of us when we watched the locks fall to the floor.

It was sad that he had to give up his hair for a job but it was a job he has been trying to get and has good benefits, etc. I guess sometimes you have to make sacrifices but this one was a big deal!

I think it's a real shame that people cannot look how they naturally are in society. A woman with long hair (usually) wouldn't be asked to cut her hair, though I am sure there must be exceptions. I know there have been issues for women with natural hair, locks and twists in the workplace but I really can't understand why! There is even a local club here in Florida that doesn't allow black men with braids, twists or locks, to me that is flat out racism!

What do you think? Have you been forced to cut your hair or change your style due to work standards?

We will leave them in for a few days before carefully un-twisting them and letting her wear a twist-out for another few days.

For Jamilah's Chunky Twists I used a mixture of products; I often like the characteristics of several different products and use more than one to achieve the desired look. For these twists I used; Darcy's Botanicals "Coils Curling Jelly", Blended Beauty "Butter me up!" and a tiny bit of Knotty boy dread wax.

I washed Jamilah's hair with some sulfate free shampoo called Just Naturals, then used a leave-in conditioner from Mixed Chicks. I brushed her hair out with a denman brush and sectioned into triangle shaped parts with a rattail comb. I then added these wooden beads that I found at the local hair shop and Loved. I got 3 packs for $2.00!!! I loved the detail of the carved beads, I really hope it shows up in these pics!

I haven't been blogging lately but I have been working on many changes.There were a few things bothering me that kind of spiraled into a depression in which I didn't even want to get out of bed...it started a bit before Christmas....money issues....past issues were triggered and before I knew it I was just a depressed mess. I hardly wanted to leave my room and I certainly didn't feel like I had anything valuable to share with the world. So my e-mails have gone unanswered, my blogs have gone untouched and I have completely lost touch with my cyber world.

I have started seeing a awesome counselor to deal with some of the issues that have been eating away at me. She's great, they could not have found me a better match....I'm journaling my journey since it's a little too personal to blog....yes,,, ha ha...I do have some boundaries of what I will not blog about but perhaps one day I'll write a book.

A lot of little girls in our circle are getting really long "booty braids" (which mean they go down to your "booty"). I see J admiring the braids and listening to the girls talk about getting their braids and she seems to be feeling a little envious. Last night she found and old can of Oil Sheen and wanted me to spray her hair with it because that's what the other girls spray on their hair. I told her "NO" because there are chemicals that could damage her hair but she seemed disappointed.

The girls around our neighborhood all have that same look, and most of the girls I have seen at her school have been relaxed. I know she already feels a little different being biracial, then add being natural and I can see that she feels she doesn't always fit in and wants to be more like the other girl.

I sometimes wish we lived in an area where the were some natural hair shows and get-togethers where J could see the beauty of natural hair. Maybe have all the natural girls meet once a week and talk about hair, beauty, being natural.....like the Natural Girl Scouts! lol HMMM maybe it would be a cool idea?!

Anyway right now I just keep reminding her of her beauty, inside and out. I really need to get back into trying more new styles.....

Hair for the sneaker lover!

J loves sneakers. I originally saw a style similar to this on another site done with ribbons. I wish I could remember the name of the site. (if anyone knows I'd be happy to post the link!!)

So I did 2 simple french braids down the back. We did a small braid across the front because J has a small bald spot that shows when her hair is parted down the middle. I took a fresh pair of hot pink laces and laced her braids like sneakers. I then wrapped the second lace around the top of her braids and tied knots to secure them leaving the laces to hang. J had a small black/pink sneaker I took off a key chain and we tied that into the knots.

This is my new favorite detangler!! I am loving it. J's hair was very tangled after washing since she had been wearing a ponytail for 2 days and had not had her hair de-tangled. I sprayed the mist of leave in conditioner in her hair and her hair just slid right through the Denman brush. The best part is that is leaves hair feeling clean, no greasiness, not weighed down!! My husband, Antonio's hair was recently locked and had been feeling dry and itchy. The other night it was driving him nuts he kept scratching at his locs so I grabbed the bottle of essential oil and applied it lightly to the scalp between his locs and he immediately felt relief. He actually hasn't had any itching since!
I used this oil on my daughter scalp also since it teds to be dry the I finger combed it through her hair. It's a bit of a heavier oil so a little goes a long way. Very nourishing, strengthening oils that add a nice sheen to the hair.

Loc Journey day 1

It took me several days of hour sessions to complete Antonio's hair. I the video I posted in my previous blog showed a different way of parting the hair but I brick layered his locs so that less scalp would show. Now, If I was going to do my daughters hair in locs I would part in half from ear to ear and front to back so she could wear ponytail's and more styles with her locs. it's just a matter of preference.

BEFORE:

Hubbys hair had some wax build up from his twists so I washed his hair with KNOTTY BOY dread shampoo to remove the wax build up. I did a second wash with a tee tree shampoo to take care of any scalp build up. I did NOT condition his hair.

I put the top of his hair into a poytail and sectioned out my first row using a rat tail comb and used little clips to section off one SMALL box at a time.

The Brick layer pattern looks like this:

I then used this method to to lock his hair.

If you click on her video you can see her moms hair that she did with this method. Yes, it looked a little rough at first but soon her mom had lovely locs!!!

I used a latchhook when my fingers could no longer pull the hair through...

This cost $2.00 at my local hair store

YAY! we're done for about 5-6 weeks when I will use the latchhook to re-tighten the roots!!

My husband has finally decided to loc his hair with a more permanent method of locking. Though he wanted brother locs there is really no one I know of in my area and honestly we don't have the $100-$350 it can cost to start brother locks. I have been watching BigandlittleM on YOUTUBE for awhile and decided to try her method.

We decide on this method because the two strand twists and braids came out of Antonio's hair before they had time to lock. I can't imagine this method coming out....even if we wanted it to so please don't try it at home unless you are 100% sure you want to loc your hair.

Our Experience:

This is a good shampoo for the whole family, chemical free and can be used on all hair types. I wasn't to sure how mint shampoo was going to smell but it's a really good scent. J said is smells like mint ice cream! Of course I love the fact that it's free of the harsh chemicals Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate. I also like the fact that it has a nice lather without using a ton of shampoo. I don't know why but I love my lather!

Our experience:

This conditioner also smells like mint ice cream...mmmm! It's a great conditioner on my hair type (blond, fine and wavy) and a good conditioner for my children. However, I recommend a separate leave-in for coarse hair that will need de-tangling.

I like to conditioner my hair and have it feel fresh and bouncy not waxy and weighed down. Organic excellence conditioner left my hair feeling great, lots of body and shine! Love it!

Our Experience:

Most natural shampoos are pretty thick and do not have much lather; this was not at all the case with this shampoo. It has a thinner consistency, makes a nice silky lather and a little goes a LONG way! At first I added way to much to my J's hair...OOOPS! J had a ton of suds on her head which was ok because since it's a body wash too she just used some of the extra suds to wash up...lol. Her hair was clean but not dry feeling.

Though it's geared for kids I used it on my hubby's hair too! He loved the fact that it was not over drying and was happy that it had a light natural scent. He is not a product junkie, like me, so he loved the fact it could be used on hair or body!!

Lots of great SHINE!! Not oily at all! This product also helps detangle.

There is a little story behind this product for me. I had done my neighbors little girl's hair a couple of weeks back. She had gone out to play the other day and got her hair all messed up AND on top of that her friend had cut off half her braids. Her mother was having a hard time getting her hair combed out and sent her over to me. I sprayed the ALL Natural Moisturizing Mist on her hair and it helped the braids and tangles slide right out of her hair!!

Possibly the BEST bar soap I have tried! Very moisturizing and awesome on sensitive skin. Anyone who is a regular reader knows we have 2 children with moderate to severe eczema depending on the season, and my husband has ultra-sensitive skin. We all used the baby soap and there were no itchies....just soft, clean skin! YAY!!! 5/5!!!

I have to say, Cara B naturally came beautifully packaged with shredded paper and tied with a pretty green bow. Great for giving as a gift!

Our experience:

This is a light hair butter with a slight marshmallow scent due to the marshmallow root used in it. It slides so nicely through the hair and helps de-tangling tremendously. This worked well for detangling my little girls hair but it's not really too thick to use in hair that is less textured than hers so it would be good for finer hair types as well!

I cannot believe the price!! You should stock up on these two products before they make it big and are forced to increase the price because Jelly Beary makes AWESOME products with an even better price tag!

This product is a bit thicker than the hair butter and definitely helps detangle. It make J's curls look so shiny and pretty and brought out the curl pattern wonderfully!! Her hair felt so soft!! At $4.50 this is not a great value....IT'S A STEAL! MUST TRY!! 5/5!!

Care: Machine wash and dry warm on the gentle cycle in a garment bag. Handwashing is not recommended as it may stretch out the material.

Our Experience:

This is a cute flower, a very funky addition to a natural hairstyle. We braided J's hair back on one side and twisted the rest, clipping the flower on the braided back side. I think it looks really cute on her!!

It was a lot of fun coming up with these, and all three received very positive feedback during our conference last weekend. We’ll be adding yoga pants, shorts, ball caps, and little treats like stickers and pencils very soon! Our three new designs will be available for order April 1st!

I love this sailing design because in the “When I Dream” video (our Pigtail Pals theme song by Jill Dawson) there is a picture of me as a child of seven years old sailing on one of my dad’s sailboats. I grew up sailing, it was our family past time. In high school I joined Sea Scouts and raced competitively around the Great Lakes. One of the best accomplishments I’ve ever had was sailing a 30 foot boat by myself on San Diego Bay with a crew of six.

This design is in honor of my daughter, the Original Pigtail Pal, whose complete obsession with dinosaurs has her thinking she is a dinosaur. She has gone so far as to tell her preschool teachers and swimming lesson instructors to call her “Amelia Dinosaur”. I think this is fantastic, except for one thing. There is not a stitch of clothing for girls that has a dinosaur on it. So we have had to shop in the boy’s department. Until now!

I am really proud of this design for two reasons. First, it is the only Breast Cancer Awareness tee that shows a girl finding the cure. For young girls who have a family member going through Breast Cancer treatments, this has become a coat of armor for them. Also, for really little girls who cannot yet read, the words “Find the Cure” on a t-shirt don’t mean anything to them. This design speaks to them in a language they understand – pictures.

This design is also in honor of a mentor of mine. When I first launched Pigtail Pals, I was very cautious to make sure my designs were diverse, kind of representing all races and no races all at the same time. Dr. Venus Evans-Winters taught me why that didn’t work. It was an important lesson for me, and I am thankful she took the time to make our conversation a teachable moment. When bridges for communication and understanding are built, barriers can be knocked down.

Reviews: What about the products we didn't like?

I bet it seems that we like every product we try? Well, Yes and No. First of all we only select companies to review that we are comfortable with. They must not use ingredients and chemicals that are harmful to the skin, body or environment. They also must have a similar basic philosophy, that being, that the human being is best in their natural state. Natural Hair is Beautiful, we are trying to enhance it and NOT change it.

If there is a product that we receive that has multiple issues then we do not review it. We just don't do the review. If there are a few small details, such as scent not being pleasant but it's great for the hair, of course we will print the review and mention the small detail. My kids could not wait to try TruKid, as soon as we opened the package everyone was trying to take a bath. Even our neighbor who was visiting wanted in on the review. They loved the bright colors and the fact that the products are all natural.

I like the fact that it is gentle and did aggravate my children's sensitive skin or eczema. My children have problems finding products that do not make them itch. As soon as they get out of the tub they run for the moisture to make the itching stop.... With Bubbly Body Wash my daughter came to me and said "Mom feel my Skin!" I asked her what she used and she said she had not even moisturized yet! The Bubbly Body wash left their skin feeling soft and clean!

MMM, Like the other two products the Kids loved the light scent (and so did I)

Nice light conditioner, no ingredients that I do not like, kids like it! SWEET!

This worked great on Z and M's Hair, if I was using on J's hair I would use a separate leave in conditioner because her type 4b hair requires the extra conditioning.

Trukid Friendly Face Wash left both my children's skin INCREDIBLY soft! Like, AMAZINGLY soft! I immediately had to try some on my own skin! I LOVE this face wash! I will continue to use it on my face and their! AWESOME product! 5/5 !!

Race & Hair

So let's talk a minute about race relations and hair.

I may have shared this story before but when J was a couple of years old I picked out her hair into this beautiful HALO. I put in a pretty head band and headed off to a local store. Now we lived in Maine at the time, in a small town and it was pretty much white. After paying for our items we stood by the front to wait for my mother to finish paying for her items. J and I played as we were approached by an older white woman. She was laughing and came up to us saying, "that can't be real!!" Confused we just looked at her when suddenly this woman reached out and grabbed a hold (with both hands) of my daughters hair and began to pull.

I just stood there, dazed and confused and was too shocked to say anything but "THAT IS HER HAIR!' Or something to that effect. I'd be happy to tell you I had words with this woman or even turned it into a teaching moment but, no, unfortunately I was too in shock to do much of anything.

The Audacity of this woman to put her hands on my little princess's hair!!! I can't even explain how mad I was. Had she never seen a black/biracial person before? Surely that couldn't be the truth!! So what in the world made her think she had the right to pull on my daughter's hair whether it was real OR fake hair??

I am sure we all have curiosity about other people and their hair. I have friends and my daughter has friends who want to touch my hair and style it. There is a level of intimacy between us where that is OK... but, you really have to know someone well to know when it's OK to be touching their hair (or body lol).

For this style I did a basic 2 strand twist on J's hair using

Just Natural Moisturizer Hair Pomade.

I divided her hair like this

I applied the pomade to each section as I went along and then divided the small sections into two pieces and twisted them around each other

I let her wear her twists for about two days but you can really wear them as long as you like

Then I carefully untwisted the twists,

DO NOT COMB,

DO NOT RUN YOUR FINGERS THROUGH TWISTED SECTIONS!

My daughter seems to love her natural hair. She loves the different styles she can achieve and likes not using chemicals, that is, until she goes to school and church. My daughter has no friends with natural hair. Really no adult role models either.

When she wears her hair picked out in a halo with a headband some of her friends call her hair "messy." She sees friends with long hair nearly to their bums and wants long hair like that, not connecting that their actual hair is very short and they are wearing weave.She gets a lot of questions about her hair and a lot of suggestions from her peers that she get a relaxer.

There has been a lot more women with natural hair in the media but not so many little girls with natural hair. I wish there was more support for her. I know some people are probably thinking, "hey it's only hair" but it's so much more than that. There is so much that natural hair means to me. It's not only safer and much better for her hair it's also telling my daughter you are WONDERFUL exactly the way you are!! My daughter does not need to be what society says she is to be, as a female or as a biracial person.

I am very positive at home about her natural hair. I love taking time to care for it properly and we never use words like "unruly" or "nappy" (though I realize some have reclaimed that word) but what can I do about all these messages she receives from her peers.

Any ideas of how J can respond to questions about her natural hair? How can she respond positively when her hair is formed into a beautiful halo is called "messy"?

Very Nice Light Lemony Herbal scent. This gel is not very thick so it's great for curly styles when you want to define the curls but not weight them down. NICE shine! This product does not dry sticky, tacky or hard....your hair just feels soft!!

I washed J's Hair with the Creamy Shampoo, rinsed and toweled off a little. I sprayed the hair treatment in her hair and detangled. Immediately her hair looked shiny and felt so soft but not oily and de-tangled so nicely. I then smoothed the leave-in conditioner in her hair. Her hair looked so pretty and her curls were defined nicely.

J wanted twists so after her hair dried naturally I sectioned off her hair and applied the pomade to each small section I wanted to twist, and I combed it through. Her twists held together beautifully. The only product that has held her twists this well is bees wax and that's for a more permanent style when trying to make dreads. I will definitely continue to use the pomade for twisting and styling her hair. AWESOME HOLD...
